Storyline

The flame for the Harbin 2025 Asian Winter Games was lit at the Sun Island Scenic Area in Harbin City, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, on Monday, with 18 days to go before the opening of the Games.

Prior to the flame collection, nine flame collectors guarded the torch, symbolizing the ninth edition of the Games.

The flame, ignited by the sun's rays through an artificial ice lens, was then presented to the public by Xu Qin, head of the Heilongjiang Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China.

Following the flame display, Xu handed the torch to flame guards who then transferred the flame to a flame lantern, which represents the torch relay is about to start in the days to come.

An online torch relay was also launched during the flame collection event.

Harbin will host the Games for the second time, as it previously hosted the event's third edition in 1996. The recently released competition schedule shows that ice hockey and curling events will begin early, on Feb 3 and 4, respectively, with the overall schedule spanning 12 days. The first gold medal event is scheduled for the morning of February 8.

Under the theme "Dream of Winter, Love Among Asians", the Games has so far received 1,275 athlete registrations (755 men and 520 women) from 34 countries and regions across Asia. This is expected to make it the edition with the highest number of participating countries, regions, and athletes.
