Storyline

Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Monday chaired a seminar soliciting opinions on a draft government work report from experts in various fields, businesspeople and representatives from sectors such as education, scientific research, culture, health and sports.

At the seminar held in Beijing, attendees said that in the face of a complex and grim situation last year, China strengthened macro regulation and introduced innovative policies and measures, achieving relatively fast economic growth and making new progress in various fields.

They also offered opinions and suggestions on how to solve the current development issues and improve the government work this year.

After listening to the attendees, Li said that over the past year, the whole country smoothly fulfilled major development goals and tasks by working hard and overcoming difficulties, thus further consolidating the foundation for stability and strengthening the momentum of progress.

Warning that China still faces many difficulties and challenges in its development, the premier called for efforts to accurately understand the situation and turn difficulties and challenges into opportunities.

Thanks to its advantages in political system, market, industry and talent, Li said, China's fundamental trend of long-term economic growth has not changed and will not change. As long as China firmly focuses on its own affairs, it will surely promote steady and sound economic development, he added.

The premier stressed the need to adopt a more proactive fiscal policy and a moderately loose monetary policy, so as to provide strong policy support for meeting challenges and promoting development.

Efforts should be made to further deepen reform and expand opening-up to stimulate the vitality of all business entities, he added.

China should, driven by scientific and technological innovations, replace the old growth drivers with new ones to cultivate more new growth areas, Li said.

He also urged more efforts to ensure and improve people's wellbeing, increase people's income, reduce their burdens and improve their quality of life.
