Chinese President Xi Jinping has visited ordinary Chinese people and joined them in preparing for the Chinese New Year during an inspection trip to the northeastern industrial hub of Liaoning Province from Wednesday to Friday.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, extended his festive greetings to all Chinese people, wishing them happiness and health, and the country peace and prosperity in the Year of the Snake.

The Chinese New Year, or the Spring Festival, which falls on Jan. 29 this year, is the most important holiday on the Chinese calendar and an occasion for family reunions.

On Thursday morning, Xi visited the time-honored Dadong non-staple food market in Shenyang, capital city of Liaoning Province, to learn about the supplies for the upcoming Spring Festival.

At the market, children were delighted to see Xi and eagerly offered him the candy they just bought.

"Thank you! I would love to have your candies. You are the future of our country. Your candy will make me sweet and happy, and I wish your lives as sweet as candy," Xi said.

Later, Xi visited Chang'an Community, a residential community in Shenyang to learn about local efforts to optimize public services and improve the people's quality of life.

Xi affirmed the community's improved living conditions and services. He pointed out urban renewal should be adapted to local conditions and combined with community construction for the convenience and benefit of people, especially the elderly and children.

In the community's service center, some community residents were writing Spring Festival couplets and children were making Chinese knots. Xi stood among them, praised their works, and encouraged them to better inherit and carry forward the excellent traditional Chinese culture.

He also enjoyed a music program played by a flute ensemble composed of retirees in the community. He said that a happy Spring Festival means a good start to the new year, calling for concerted efforts to build a better life.

"On behalf of the CPC Central Committee, I extend New Year greetings to the Chinese people of all ethnic groups, compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, and overseas Chinese. I wish you all good health and success, and your families every happiness, and good luck in the Year of the Snake! May our great motherland enjoy favorable conditions and prosperity, and our people live in peace and harmony!" Xi said.

At the community's cultural square, residents performed the jubilant Yangko dance, a traditional folk dance of the Han ethnic group commonly performed in the northern provinces. Xi waved to them and wished everyone a happy new year.
