The consumer sentiment for the United States fell to 64.7 in February, down from the preliminary reading of 67.8, according to a report released by the University of Michigan on Friday.
The figure is significantly down from 71.7 in January, marking the lowest level since November 2023, said the report.
The report attributed the sharp drop in consumer confidence primarily to concerns among respondents about President Donald Trump's potential tariff increases, which could lead to rising inflation rates.
According to the survey, U.S. consumers currently expect an inflation rate of 4.3 percent over the next year, with an average inflation rate of 3.5 percent anticipated over the next five years.
Long-term inflation expectations have reached their highest level in 30 years, the report said.
