China will take all necessary countermeasures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests if the United States insists on going ahead with its additional tariffs on Chinese imports, said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce on Friday.
The remarks came in response to a question regarding the U.S. threat to impose an additional 10-percent tariff on Chinese imports starting March 4, citing fentanyl-related concerns.
China has repeatedly stated that unilateral tariffs violate the World Trade Organization (WTO) rules and undermine the multilateral trading system, said the spokesperson, adding that China firmly opposes such action.
As one of the world's toughest countries on counternarcotics both in terms of policy and its implementation, China has actively engaged in international drug control cooperation with countries worldwide, including the United States, the spokesperson said.
However, the U.S. side has consistently ignored the facts, previously levying a 10-percent tariff on Chinese imports under the pretext of fentanyl-related issues. Now, it is once again threatening to impose additional tariffs, said the spokesperson.
According to the spokesperson, the U.S. move is nothing but an attempt to shift blame, which does nothing to resolve its own problems. Instead, it will add to the burden on American businesses and consumers while further disrupting global supply chain stability.
China hopes that the United States will stop aggravating its wrongful act, and return to the right track of properly addressing differences through dialogue, said the spokesperson.
