Storyline

China's top political advisory body will continue to facilitate the country's opening up in a bid to promote the building of an open world economy, said Liu Jieyi, spokesman for the third session of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), on Monday.

At a press conference one day prior to the opening of the annual session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee in Beijing, Liu highlighted China's role as a driving force in the global economy and the political advisory body's role in pursuing a higher opening-up of the country.

"Economic globalization is an objective requirement of the development of social productive forces, an inevitable outcome of scientific and technological progress, and also the only road for the advancement of human society and an irreversible trend of the times. China firmly stands on the right side of history, and its door to opening-up will only go wider," Liu said.

Over the past year, Liu noted, China continued to serve as the largest engine for global economic growth, accelerated the building of new institutions for an open economy at higher standard, maintained its position as the world's largest trader in goods and second largest import market.

He also pointed out that China made new progress in the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative, and build broad platforms for global economic cooperation through hosting international exhibitions like the China International Import Expo (CIIE).

Liu then elaborated on the CPPCC National Committee's role in advancing China's opening-up efforts over the past year and its commitment to further opening in the future.

"The CPPCC National Committee has long been committed to serving the country's opening up to the world. Over the past year, the CPPCC National Committee focused on such important issues as expanding institutional opening-up, optimizing regional distribution for opening-up, and promoting the high-quality development of the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative to extensively engage in consultations and deliberations. It held special consultations on 'promoting high-level opening-up' and bi-weekly seminars on 'implementing the strategy of improving pilot free trade pilot zones,' conducted inspections and investigations on the construction of core areas of the Belt and Road Initiative, and provided CPPCC wisdom for advancing high-level opening-up. Special supervision on the implementation of major measures related to opening-up in the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) were carried out to gain in-depth understanding of the situation and put forward targeted supervision opinions."

"CPPCC members have put forward many insightful suggestions and proposals on creating a world-class business environment in free trade zones, consolidating risk prevention and control systems, leveraging the role of Hong Kong and Macao in building a new system of higher-level open economy, and promoting service trade innovation and pilot cross-border data flows. We will, as always, resolutely support and participate in economic globalization, unswervingly expand opening-up, and work with countries around the world to share opportunities, realize prosperity, and jointly promote the construction of an open world economy," said Liu.

At the press conference, Liu also announced that the third session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee is scheduled to conclude on March 10.
