Storyline

International journalists covering the just-concluded "two sessions" political meetings in Beijing have stressed the global significance of the relationship between China and the United States against the current uncertain geopolitical backdrop, after attending a press conference which outlined China's foreign policies on Friday.

More than 500 journalists attended Friday's news conference held by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during which he answered questions on a wide range of issues and discussed China's foreign policy vision.

The press conference came during China's "two sessions", which refer to the annual meetings of the country's national legislature and top political advisory body.

Wang highlighted China's relations with the United States and warned against the protectionist policies being taken by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Since Trump returned to the White House in January, his administration has been pushing its so-called "America First" approach, threatening a new round of trade wars against multiple countries.

Acknowledging the importance of China-U.S. relations, journalists from various countries expressed their concerns over the aggressive foreign policy agenda being pursued by the Trump, who has also threatened to take control of the Panama Canal and Greenland.

"About two months ago, the United States ambassador in Zimbabwe came out of nowhere to attack Chinese enterprises in Zimbabwe. So, we are used to this. And we understand that this is a very relevant issue, the China-U.S. relationship will always affect the rest of the world," said Monica Cheru, managing editor of Zimbabwe's Zim Now.

"The United States is putting a lot of pressure on our region, on the Latin American region," said Guiherme Raladino, a political reporter for Brasil 247 news site.

The wider consequences of China-U.S. relations are also of concern amid the current set of global economic challenges.

Trump moved to impose a new 10 percent tariff on Chinese goods at the start of this month, while U.S. stock markets are also reacting amid mounting concerns and uncertainty.

China has accused the U.S. of taking a "two-faced" approach -- seeking good relations with China while suppressing its development.

Journalists said they hope the two major global powers can find a way to resolve their differences, saying a healthy China-U.S. relationship meets the world's expectations and benefits the interests of the entire international community.

"China and the U.S. are the major powers in the world right now, especially [economically]," Mario Pascal, a journalist for Radio Republik Indonesia.

"I am looking at how China and the U.S. can bridge their differences," said Stephen Asante, a chief reporter for the Ghana News Agency.

"[It's important that] when we are not competing with each other, but saying, how do we build the world together?" said Cheru.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Wang mentioned the Global South in eight of his responses to the 23 questions posed by journalists during Friday's press conference, and said that the Global South "holds the key to bringing stability to the world."

Amid these turbulent times, many believe developing countries must strive to work together and build stronger partnerships in order to boost joint development.

"It is very important for the Global South countries, the BRICS countries, and the Latin American countries to maintain a partnership with China in this disturbing time of geopolitics," said Raladino.
