Storyline

A total of 126 individual snow leopards have been identified in Nagqu City of southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, according to a recent survey co-conducted by the local forestry bureau and the Shan Shui Conservation Center, a Chinese NGO dedicated to species and ecosystem conservation.

This finding highlights Nagqu as a key habitat for snow leopards in the heart of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Known as the "king of the snow mountains," the snow leopard is a first-class nationally protected species in China and listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Since 2021, 217 infrared cameras have been installed, capturing 2,538 images of snow leopards and identifying 126 individuals, including 12 cubs.

The valuable footage is significant for further research on snow leopard populations in Nagqu.

The survey also recorded 37 other nationally protected species, including the golden cat and the dhole, underscoring the region's rich biodiversity.
