China's basic medical insurance coverage remained stable at 95 percent in 2024, with 1.3 billion people participating, according to a report released by the National Healthcare Security Administration on Friday.
The insurance coverage rate for low-income people and those recently lifted out of poverty remained above 99 percent.
A total of 86.23 million participants of the basic medical insurance scheme were subsidized by the 25 provinces that undertook the task of poverty alleviation.
In 2024, the total income of the medical insurance fund was 3.48 trillion yuan, while the total expenditure was 2.97 trillion yuan, with a surplus of more than 510 billion yuan. The pooling funds for employee medical insurance and resident medical insurance all recorded a surplus in the year.
"China's medical insurance fund expenditure of nearly 3 trillion yuan accounts for only 2.2 percent of the country's GDP, but has ensured medical insurance coverage for nearly 1.33 billion people. The cumulative surplus of 3.8 trillion yuan provides a solid foundation for people to access secure healthcare," said Zhang Chenguang, deputy head of the administration's department of planning, financing and regulation.
