"The whole tariff regime has taken all of us by surprise and I do not think any one country acting unilaterally on its own will present a situation that will be accepted globally, or that is good for everybody globally. What is good for the United States must be good for Kenya. Otherwise, we will not have a win-win outcome, and a win-lose outcome will always result in everybody eventually losing."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) William Ruto, Kenyan President (partially overlaid with shots 8-11/ending with shot 12):
"We should be working more with multilateralism than unilateralism, because we believe that multilateralism has greater safeguards and provides an even environment for trade for nations across the world. Because as things stand today, globalization of trade is not an option. It is an existential imperative. I do not think any one company anywhere in the world can survive on its own. We need to look at it from that global sense. In that way, it is only multilateralism that will guarantee global trade, and global trade is the fuel for progress and development and commerce and growth."

Globalization of trade is an irreversible trend and countries around the world should seek win-win outcomes by pursuing multilateralism, according to Kenyan President William Ruto, who is on a state visit to China this week at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
In an exclusive interview with China Central Television (CCTV), Ruto said that only multilateralism can ensure the stability of global trade, and there will be no winners from the United States' unilateral imposition of sweeping tariffs.
"The whole tariff regime has taken all of us by surprise and I do not think any one country acting unilaterally on its own will present a situation that will be accepted globally, or that is good for everybody globally. What is good for the United States must be good for Kenya. Otherwise, we will not have a win-win outcome, and a win-lose outcome will always result in everybody eventually losing," said Ruto.
Ruto said more efforts should be invested in multilateralism rather than unilateralism, and described the globalization of trade as "an existential imperative".
