An Iranian nuclear negotiation delegation, led by Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, had arrived in Muscat, the capital of Oman and will hold the third round of indirect talks with the U.S. team under the mediation of Oman on Saturday, Iran's Foreign Ministry announced on Friday.
It said the talks will focus on the Iranian nuclear issue and the lifting of U.S. sanctions on Iran.
On April 12, the U.S. and Iran held indirect talks in Muscat, marking the first official negotiation between the two sides since the U.S. unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in May 2018 during President Donald Trump's first term.
The second round of indirect talks took place in Rome, Italy, on April 19.
Some Iranian citizens believe that reaching an agreement is better than going to war, saying if the U.S. can honor its commitments, they hope both sides can cut a deal.
However, some others pointed out that past experience shows U.S. promises are unreliable, and they hope the Iranian government remains cautious and does not fall into a trap set by the U.S.
"I believe after the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, now Iran no longer holds high expectations for these negotiations and their outcomes," said a Iranian resident.
In addition, some citizens emphasized that although Iran and the U.S. have started indirect talks, the U.S. government continues imposing sanctions on Iran, which they see as a sign of U.S. hegemony.
They stressed that the Iranian negotiating team must safeguard national interests and the demands of the Iranian people on key issues.
"We hope that through the Iranian government’s efforts, our negotiating team can succeed in these talks, removing oppressive sanctions on Iran, and at the same time, retaining Iran’s inalienable nuclear rights to create opportunities for the livelihood of the Iranian people," said another resident.
On Friday, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said in a statement that the progress of the negotiations depends on the sincerity, seriousness, and realism of the U.S.
He said Iran’s negotiating team will formulate its policies based on past negotiation experience and the behavior of the U.S., and will resolutely defend the interests of the Iranian nation and people.
